People at Kingwood House Stables

At Kingwood House Stables, we understand that the quest for success is only possible through sustained and concerted teamwork.

The tightly-knit team at Kingwood has been forged on a foundation of years of hard-won, professional experience, combined with remarkable loyalty and dedication, much of it beyond the public gaze. The following details offer brief information on just some of the people at Kingwood who contribute to the stable's growing successes. Contact details appear at the foot of this page.

Marcus Tregoning - Trainer

Marcus has worked in the racing industry all his life, including periods in New Zealand and America. He readily acknowledges the great influence on his career of 14 years spent as Assistant to Major Dick Hern, initially at the historic stables of West Ilsley, but subsequently at the new, purpose-built Kingwood House Stables. At that time he was also a successful Amateur Rider, winning several point-to-points.

In 1997, upon the Major's retirement, Marcus was appointed Trainer at Kingwood House Stables and his in-depth understanding of the gallops and facilities has reaped its own rewards. Several seasons later, with a winner to runner percentage regularly in excess of 20% and five Group I victories achieved, the success of the operation is already apparent.

On the rare occasions he is not overseeing the horses, Marcus and his wife, Arabella, have their hands full looking after their four young children.

Marie McClure - Racing Secretary

Marie is responsible for all the day-to-day racing administration. Prior to joining us in 2003, she worked spent six years working for Paul Cole, and racing is in her blood as Marie's father used to be a jockey.

Louise ('Boony') Ferrand - Secretary

Boony previously provided secretarial cover at Kingwood during staff holidays during the last year or two, and has carried out similar duties at other yards, but has joined us full-time this season to help out with the increasing administrative load of our expanding stable.

Patrick MacEwan - Assistant Trainer

Nine years as Assistant to Peter Walwyn and two years with a top racing yard in South Africa have given Pat an enviable grounding in all aspects of the requirements for running a successful stable. His role combines acting as back-up for Marcus, while ensuring the smooth running of the daily training regime. Although no longer holding an Amateur Rider's permit, he continues to ride out.

Vic Chitty - Head Lad

Having worked for Major Hern since the early 1960's and graduated to Assistant Head Lad twenty years later, Vic was Head Lad for the Major's last training season. He was, therefore, the obvious candidate to fulfil that role for Marcus. He continues to ride out one of the yard's three hacks every day to oversee the horses' exercise.

Pete West - Travelling Head Lad

Pete worked for Major Hern for over thirty years, and has continued in the post of Travelling Head Lad since Marcus took over the reins in late 1997. He is a familiar face at racecourses all over the country, driving either of the stable's two modern horseboxes.

John Lake - 2nd Head Lad

John was an obvious person to join the new team at Kingwood House in this important role, have previously worked for the Major for 11 years. Now fully recovered from a very bad fall in 1997, John continues to be a valuable rider as well as overseeing the daily activities within the yards.

Richard Gaskell - Race Planning

Richard assists with race planning and entries. He has known Marcus for several years, having worked for Major Dick Hern when he moved to Kingwood in 1991. He helps Marcus on a daily basis with placing the horses, as well as selecting suitable races.

Management

Marcus is supported by the management team of Angus Gold, Richard Lancaster and Chris Kennard, who are based at Shadwell Stud but visit Kingwood House on a regular basis. Angus is probably familiar to the racing public in his main role as Racing Manager to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

Jockeys

Richard Hills

Richard has, for several years, been retained to ride Sheikh Hamdan's horses in the UK, and is, therefore, first choice in the majority of Kingwood House runners. His experience of riding the bloodlines bred by Sheikh Hamdan can prove of considerable use to Marcus, particularly when placing unraced two-year-olds.

Martin Dwyer

Martin, son-in-law of local trainer Willie Muir, regularly rides work for Marcus and is the first to be approached to partner any horses not claimed by Richard Hills or Willie Supple. He has already become a valued member of the team.

Willie Supple

Retained as second jockey for Sheikh Hamdan's horses for the last couple of years, Willie has now ridden several winners for Marcus (including Listed winner HAMMIYA) and rides work for him whenever possible.
